I Looked Healthy…But I Was Infertile: When Wellness Turns Into Obsession

Feb 22, 2026

There was a time when I looked like the picture of health.

✅ I ate super clean.
✅ I exercised consistently (and always hit my 10K+ steps a day)
✅ I was lean and fit.
✅ I cared deeply (well, obsessed actually) about what went into and on my body.

Most people would have said I was healthy… but my body told a different story.

My period was missing.

Losing My Period Felt Normal...Even Convenient.

At the time, I didn’t fully understand what that meant. Honestly, I was thrilled. I thought, “This is GREAT!” Periods felt like such a burden with cramps, mood swings and the inconveniences. Multiple doctors told me it was normal; one even said it was healthy, and that I shouldn’t worry until I wanted to get pregnant. Their solution? The pill.

It’s no wonder so many women are taught to see fertility as optional…and I did too.

Your Menstrual Cycle Is a Vital Sign

What I didn’t know at the time and I wish I would have is that your menstrual cycle is your fifth vital sign. As Lisa Hendrickson-Jack teaches and emphasizes, it shows whether your brain, metabolism, hormones, and nervous system are working together. A fertile body is a healthy body.

If you don’t have regular ovulatory periods during your reproductive years, something is off… even if everything else looks “healthy” on the outside.

Here’s the truth: health is not a look. Health is how your body functions. Lean, toned, or fit does not equal health, especially if you don’t have an ovulatory cycle.

Diet culture has trained us to rely on external markers: weight, BMI, “clean eating,” and exercise. We’re told to control ourselves constantly, eat less, move more, or we’ll gain weight. When our bodies break down internally, because we “look the part,” no one thinks maybe we need to eat more, move less, or rest. This disconnect is why so many women today have hormonal issues and infertility, even when they appear “perfectly healthy.”

You can look healthy and still be deeply undernourished.

The Healthiest Women We See Are Often the Most Infertile

That’s exactly what we see in our fertility practice, The HA Society. We specialize in helping women recover from hypothalamic amenorrhea, a condition where the brain shuts down ovulation due to an energy deficit from under-eating, over-exercising, stress, or all three.

Many of the women we work with are what most people would consider the healthiest women. They eat whole foods, avoid processed foods, exercise regularly, and are disciplined and motivated. They’re doing everything “right.” And yet, their periods are gone, and they are infertile.

Extreme health behaviors (and ideas of health) push the body into survival mode. Too little food. Too few carbohydrates. Too much exercise. Too much control. From the outside, this looks like dedication. From the inside, the body experiences stress. A body in survival mode does not prioritize reproduction.

Here’s the other thing. Even if you never want children or aren’t actively TTC (trying to conceive), your fertility (your menstrual cycle) is not optional. Your fertility is an intricate part of your health i.e. bone, heart and brain health all depend on healthy levels of estrogen and progesterone.

Today, one of the clearest markers of health I look for personally and professionally is a consistent, ovulatory menstrual cycle. It’s one of the strongest signals that the body feels safe, supported, and nourished.

Wellness Without Obsession

Because of our experiences with diet culture, fitness culture, wellness culture and the extremes we’ve all seen in ourselves and our clients, we created Jool Wellness with a different philosophy. We’re not about perfection or obsession. We’re about wellness that is balanced, flexible, and sustainable. We encourage you to listen to your body, nourish it without fear, and take a realistic approach to health. We are not all or nothing. We are more scrunchy than crunchy.

Wellness doesn’t need to be prescriptive or fear-based. It shouldn’t make you feel like you’re failing. It should support your life force, your fertility, and your health, without obsession.

If this resonates, you’re in the right place.
